This month, we started our first round of Oncology exercise classes; Fatigue Fighters and Recover Strength Class. In our Fatigue Fighter class, we aim to progressively introduce activity to maintain function, prevent deconditioning and minimise side effects of chemotherapy. Our Recover Strength Class aims for the patient to be able to continue independently with a safe progressive strengthening program at home, of which they understand the fundamentals of monitoring for contraindications, as well as how to continue to progress loading in line with current guidelines.
Why are we doing this program?
Our Oncology exercise classes were chosen because of the positive outcomes demonstrated by the PAL trial, a large clinical trial conducted at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, composed of 154 BrCA survivors WITHOUT lymphedema and 141 BrCA survivors WITH lymphedema. Women who participated showed benefits such as:
50% reduced likelihood of lymphedema worsening
70% reduced likelihood of lymphedema onset among women with 5 or more nodes removed
Improved strength and energy
Improved body image
Reduced body fat
Prevented declines in physical function that can occur after breast cancer.
It's been 3 weeks into our program, and our small class of 4 wonderful ladies has generated a mountain load of positive energy, fun and mateship. We look forward to the coming weeks!
